Empowering the Vision Project
Young people across the world encounter employment problems, but Tibetan youths have additional hurdles to overcome. Tibetan parents often have a poor understanding of the modern job market due to language difficulties and a lack of education. This means they are often unable to provide their children with the necessary support and career advice. In addition, young Tibetans are often sent away from their parents and communities to schools where they receive poor career advice.
In 2003 Tibet Relief Fund established its Youth Opportunity initiative, now ‘Empowering the Vision’, designed to address these problems by creating a long-term sustainable programme aiming to support, motivate and empower young adults to take their place in the community.
The project is run from our offices in Delhi with young Tibetans working as consultants for Tibet Relief Fund and thereby acting as role models themselves. The project includes providing career advice to schoolchildren, assisting young adults to establish new businesses and creating employment opportunities. There is also a focus on training courses, CV writing, life skills and motivational workshops, confidence building and interview techniques. An interactive website portal for jobseekers, entrepreneurs, students and all those in need of career guidance has also been created: www.empoweringvision.org/
