Leaving Fear Behind is a remarkable film shot inside Tibet by two brave Tibetan filmmakers, recording the testimony of ordinary Tibetans ready to tell the world of their suffering under the repression of the Chinese occupation.
This extremely moving documentary is made even more poignant by the news that in late December 2009 one of the filmmakers, Dhondup Wangchen, was given a six year prison sentence for “inciting separatism” for making the documentary. He was arrested shortly after completing interviews for his film in March 2008, held in detention for over 18 months and had no independent legal representation of his choice at his trial.
Before Dhondup was arrested footage was smuggled out of Tibet from which Leaving Fear Behind (24 mins) has been produced.
The DVD has a bonus of two additional short films. Behind the Sea (13 mins) is the moving story of Dhondup Wangchen’s wife, Lhamo Tso, and her life without her husband. Dhadon’s letter to Dhondup (2 mins) is an appeal to join the campaign for Dhondup’s release featuring a letter from his daughter.
