The Tibetan word for prayer flag is 'Lung ta', meaning 'Wind Horse'. When the wind blows, the prayers contained on the flag are carried out to all beings as a blessing. Each colour has a meaning:
- blue for sky or space
- white for air or clouds
- red for fire
- green for water
- yellow for earth
